Revolutionary Interoceanic Train Project Progress Unveiled

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recently highlighted the significant progress of the Interoceanic Train project at a press conference. He emphasized the project's strategic importance in the context of growing maritime trade and the increasing congestion of the Panama Canal. The project, which includes extensions towards Guatemala and the Maya Train to the north, is set to revolutionize the country's logistical connectivity.

Navy Secretary, Rafael Ojeda, elaborated on the project, stating it encompasses three crucial railway lines. These include the Z line from Coatzacoalcos to Salina Cruz, the FA line connecting Coatzacoalcos with Palenque and the Maya Train, and the K line extending to the northern border. These lines will enhance exports to Central America and the East Coast of the United States.

Raymundo Morales Ángeles, director of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Transoceanic Corridor, underscored the projected profitability of the project. He anticipates it will reach the breakeven point by mid-2027, with estimated earnings exceeding 1,800 million pesos by the end of that year.

The project covers a total of 1,189 kilometers of tracks, supplementing the 1,554 kilometers of the Maya Train. This forms a comprehensive railway network spanning over 2,600 kilometers. Morales Ángeles also emphasized the transformation of the ports of Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz into essential logistic centers. These ports currently have the capacity to handle 300,000 containers, with a future projection of up to 1.4 million containers.

Additionally, the rehabilitation and construction of railway lines connecting with Puerto Chiapas and Dos Bocas were mentioned, further bolstering the country's logistical infrastructure.

Regarding community and social aspects, Edna Vega, Deputy Minister of Territorial Planning of SEDATU, reported on the progress in track clearance. She highlighted that a 98% clearance has been achieved on the Coatzacoalcos-Salina Cruz line and 99% on the K line towards the border. This progress facilitates the integration of local communities into the development associated with the project.
