Melisa Flores Velázquez, an employee at a gas station en route to Tulum's archaeological zone, has been missing for five days. This information comes from the "Colectiva Feminista Tulum", a local feminist collective, who have raised concerns about her disappearance. Velázquez's family, based in Puebla, is desperately searching for her, having received no news of her whereabouts since she disappeared from her workplace in Quintana Roo's eighth municipality.
The collective is urging the general public to help by circulating Velázquez's image and any information they may have. They have asked for the community's assistance in supporting her family during this difficult time. They have also encouraged people to report any relevant information via social media.
The "Colectiva Feminista Tulum" has voiced concerns about safety in the area, noting that Tulum is not a secure place. They have made their social media platforms available for anyone who may have information that could help locate Velázquez and assist her worried mother.
The collective has also called for a Gender Alert in Tulum, highlighting the ongoing risk for women in the area. They have criticized local authorities for their perceived lack of action in preventing such incidents and apprehending those responsible. They argue that Tulum's reputation as a safe place is misleading and that authorities are failing to address the issue.
In the wake of Velázquez's disappearance, the collective has vowed to continue demanding a Gender Alert in the municipality. They stress that both the community and the authorities have a responsibility to make Tulum a genuinely safe place. "Today, we are without Melisa! Tomorrow it could be your friend, your sister, your mother, your daughter, your partner," they warned in a Facebook post.
The collective has urged the public not to stay silent, emphasizing that the ongoing disappearances in the area must not continue.
