Homún, Yucatán — The Government of the Maya Renaissance, led by Joaquín Díaz Mena, has recognized and supported the innovation of tourism products by service providers in Yucatán’s municipalities. Through the Secretariat of Tourism Development of Yucatán (SEFOTUR), the government promotes attractions that celebrate local culture while leveraging technology to offer unique experiences for local, national, and international visitors.

New Attractions at Cenote Santa Rosa

With this vision, SEFOTUR has collaborated with the private sector to advance projects aimed at boosting regional tourism development. In this context, the agency witnessed the inauguration of new attractions and services at Cenote Santa Rosa, located in the municipality of Homún.

The new offerings include a pyramid featuring a ceramic exhibit and a representation of a Mayan tomb inside, two new boutique cabins, palapas with bar service, and a video mapping spectacle inside the cenote cavern. Titled Nilú, Nilú, the audiovisual show was created by visual artist Josué Abraham Palma and presents a reinterpretation of the Popol Vuh, narrated in both Maya and Spanish.

Raúl Paz Noriega, Undersecretary of Sustainable Tourism Development, represented SEFOTUR at the event and commended the efforts of Cenote Santa Rosa’s founder, Gabriel Cabrera Pech, and its general director, Mónica Cabrera Pacheco. He highlighted their work as an example of Yucatecan investors’ confidence in developing projects with economic and social impact for their communities.

Significant Benefits for the Community

The project has generated 60 direct and 120 indirect jobs for the local community. The new attractions complement existing services, including lodging, a restaurant, rest areas, showers, changing rooms, lockers, photo spots, life jackets for swimming in the open cenote, handicraft sales, ample parking, and guided tours to nearby cenotes.

Paz Noriega emphasized that this development stands as one of Yucatán’s most notable projects due to its contribution to the evolution of the destination and its role in ensuring that Homún families benefit from tourism activity.

Immersive Video Mapping Experience

The video mapping projection was designed to immerse spectators, making them feel part of the visuals. The projection covers the cavern’s interior and is enhanced by reflections on the water, allowing the spectacle to be enjoyed even while submerged in the cenote.

The show will debut on Saturday, April 19, with schedules to be announced on Cenote Santa Rosa’s social media channels. It will be available every Saturday and Sunday as part of the site’s attractions, with limited capacity.
