New! Controversy Alert: Bypass Threatens Businesses in Quintana Roo

The proposed construction of a peripheral circuit could have serious implications for local businesses, most of which are located in the city center. This is according to Carlos Pérez Díaz, a former leader of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) in the Solidaridad municipality.

In a recent discussion, Díaz highlighted that a decrease in inner-city traffic could negatively impact a range of businesses, from restaurants and grocery stores to gas stations. This is because a significant portion of their sales rely on the passing motorists.

While acknowledging the issues caused by heavy transport traffic in the city center, Díaz expressed concerns that a bypass could be detrimental to businesses. He noted that approximately 70% of gas station sales are dependent on passing motorists. This is particularly true for Morelos, which is situated halfway between Mérida and Chetumal. Many travelers use this route to rest and dine at local restaurants.

Díaz also stressed the importance of considering the views of all residents, including business owners. While they are not opposed to development, he pointed out that a significant 80% of businesses in the municipal capital are located in the city center, and would therefore be heavily impacted by such a project.
