In a recent formal gathering at the State Congress, Quintana Roo's Secretary of Ecology and Environment, Óscar Rébora Aguilera, presented the "Ramón Bravo Prieto" Medal for Ecological Merit to Cecilia Gutiérrez Navarro. Navarro, a staunch defender of marine ecosystems and a leading figure in shark protection efforts, was recognized for her contributions to environmental preservation.
This award, presented as part of the New Agreement for the Wellbeing and Development of Quintana Roo, is intended to honor those who have devoted their lives to studying, protecting, and conserving marine ecosystems. The medal is named in honor of Ramón Bravo Prieto, a renowned ecologist and journalist whose work continues to inspire future generations to champion environmental defense.
The Evaluation Council, consisting of representatives from the State Government, the SEMA, the Legislative and Judicial branches, and representatives from Quintana Roo's 11 municipalities, selected Navarro for her significant contributions to shark conservation and the protection of marine ecosystems.
In his closing remarks, Rébora Aguilera noted: "This award is not just an acknowledgment — it's a call to action. It's a reminder to never stop fighting, to continue working tirelessly to protect our species, wildlife, and ecosystems. Today, we reaffirm our steadfast commitment to environmental protection. We will continue to build a sustainable future for Quintana Roo on solid foundations."
