Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A woman died in a horrific accident early Monday morning after the car she was traveling in collided at high speed with a mototaxi on the Playa del Carmen–El Tintal highway near the Tren Maya station. The crash, which occurred at 7:30 a.m., also left two men injured, including the car’s driver, who remains in critical condition.

Fatal Collision Involving Volkswagen Jetta and Mototaxi

Preliminary reports indicate that a gray Volkswagen Jetta with Mexico City license plates was speeding when it struck a mototaxi operated by the Sindicato Tortugas Franja Amarilla. The impact was so severe that the female passenger in the front seat was decapitated. Her body remained inside the vehicle, while her head was found meters away on the roadway.

Emergency responders extracted the trapped driver from beneath the car and transported him to a nearby hospital in grave condition. The mototaxi driver, who sustained minor injuries, managed to escape before his vehicle caught fire and received on-site medical attention.

Aftermath and Traffic Disruptions

The collision also knocked down a power line, prompting a multi-agency response. Personnel from the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana, Protección Civil, and the fire department cordoned off the area. Forensic teams covered the victim’s body with a blue tarp pending further investigation.

The Playa del Carmen–El Tintal junction was completely closed for several hours, causing significant traffic delays. Partial access toward Playa del Carmen reopened after 9:30 a.m., but the route to Mérida remained shut for cleanup operations.

Investigation Underway

The State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation to determine liability. Authorities urged drivers to exercise caution in the area and avoid reckless maneuvers.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
