A woman named Edith tragically lost her life following a brutal attack by her ex-partner in the county of Solidaridad. The man doused her in gasoline and set her on fire while she was at work in a laundromat. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community of Playa del Carmen, leaving her family and society mourning a preventable tragedy.
Local residents near the laundromat where Edith worked reported that her ex-partner, Julio César "N.", had previously threatened her life. These threats tragically came to fruition when he carried out the violent act.
After the attack in late August, Edith was hospitalized for three months due to severe second-degree burns. She succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, November 14, at the General Hospital of Playa del Carmen.
A neighbor, Carmela D., confirmed that it was Edith's ex-partner who was responsible for the attack. She recounted multiple instances where she had witnessed him intimidating Edith and had even assisted her in calling the police after one of his threats. Despite being taken into police custody briefly, Julio César "N." continued his threats and harassment.
Carmela revealed that Edith had obtained a restraining order against her ex-partner, but tragically, this did not protect her. The couple was originally from Veracruz, and Julio César "N." had been pressuring Edith to return and live with him.
Despite being charged with attempted femicide since September 17th, Julio César "N." could not be prevented from carrying out his threats. Edith, who suffered burns on 70 percent of her body, did not survive and will be laid to rest in the municipal cemetery of Puerto Morelos.
The Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (Geavig) is handling the case. This is the second such incident this year, following a case in March where a man threw paint thinner at a woman.
