Civil and environmental activists gathered at the 5th kilometer of Kukulkán Boulevard, in the Hotel Zone of Cancún, this morning. They symbolically closed the offices of the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) in protest.
The group of around 20 people displayed a banner bearing the word “ecocide”, and held signs that read “without water there is no life” and “without cenotes there is no paradise”.
The activists accuse Semarnat and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) of negligence. They claim these organizations have allowed the devastation and pollution of the Mayan aquifer due to the sinking of piles to support the tracks of the Mayan Train on section 5 south, which runs from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.
In response, the protestors symbolically sealed the offices of Semarnat. They placed seals on the walls of the federal secretariat, located next to the Art Garden, with the inscription "citizen closure, for non-compliance and being an accomplice to ecocide".
Local transit, municipal, and tourist police arrived at the scene. They managed traffic around the protest area, ensuring circulation was not affected.
The peaceful demonstration concluded with the environmentalists standing on the boulevard for 5 minutes, blocking only one of the two lanes. They read a manifesto before departing.
The protest was organized by the Environmental Alliance of the Mexican Caribbean and other groups affiliated with the Save me from the Train movement.
