Deadly Parvovirus Outbreak Hits Yucatán: Urgent Vaccination Needed

Dr. Eduardo Ávalos, a leading figure at the College of Veterinary Specialists for Small Species in Yucatán, has shared important information about a parvovirus outbreak in the region. He stressed that while parvovirus is not new – we've been living with it since the late 70s – there are different strains of the virus. One of these, PVC 2c, is relatively new and not all available vaccines offer protection against it.

This strain is currently spreading rapidly throughout the Yucatán Peninsula. Dr. Ávalos stressed the importance of vaccinating dogs to help control the outbreak. The highest number of cases have been reported in Mérida, Valladolid and Ticul, but there has also been a significant increase in Campeche and Quintana Roo.

The surge in cases is putting pressure on local hospitals, with many seeing an influx of dogs requiring treatment for the disease. It's clear that this outbreak is a serious concern for the region and pet owners are urged to take preventative measures.
