Cancún, Mexico — Family and friends of Alejandro Cortés, the American tourist who drowned in the waters off Cancún, have spoken out about the accident that claimed the young man’s life. On Facebook, a young woman, also American, expressed gratitude to Alejandro for allegedly saving her life—a claim later confirmed by the deceased tourist’s mother.
Mother Identifies Friends and Calls for Prayers
Alejandro’s mother reportedly identified the young women who had traveled with her son through a social media post. She also asked loved ones to pray for them, acknowledging the trauma they endured following his death.
"Today, I want to ask everyone to also pray for these wonderful young women—some of Alejandro’s closest friends. They were with him in Cancún, and what was supposed to be a celebratory weekend turned into this terrible tragedy," she wrote.
She continued, "Lyric, Sky, Ja'Niya, and Alejandro loved you all so much. I’m praying for you in this situation. I pray that God embraces you and that you find peace and healing soon. I’m so grateful for your presence in his life."
Survivor Credits Alejandro for Her Life
One of the women tagged in the post, identified as Lyric Dorsey, responded on social media, making it clear that she owes her survival to Alejandro. She thanked supporters for their messages and urged friends to honor his memory.
"I appreciate all the love and messages I’ve received. It’s hard to respond to everyone, but I see them, and I just want you to know I’m okay," Lyric wrote. "Many people asked how they could help. Please support my second family: Renée González. Reach out to her, share information about memorial events, donate whatever you can—big or small. I’m here because of her son, so please help me honor him and spread the word."
Emotional Farewell and Final Photo Shared
Lyric also shared a heartfelt farewell message on Facebook, remembering Alejandro as a kind and joyful person. "I truly have no words, but I love you so much, Alejandro. Thank you, my sweet boy. I’ll love you always and forever," she wrote. The post has garnered over 55 reactions, with friends and family expressing condolences and mourning the tragic incident.
A photo circulating online shows Alejandro with his friends on Cancún’s beaches, believed to be among the last taken before the accident. Meanwhile, his parents continue to seek donations to repatriate his body to the United States, where he will be laid to rest surrounded by loved ones.
