Labor Disputes Rock Mérida Hotels: Crisis Unfolds!

Mérida is currently grappling with the closure of a second hotel within 24 hours due to labor disputes. The Hyatt Regency, situated on Paseo de Montejo, began eviction of approximately 500 guests last night in preparation for a scheduled strike at 2:00 pm today. The labor crisis in the hotel sector was triggered last Friday with the commencement of a strike at the Los Aluxes hotel, the first such stoppage in over a decade in Yucatán.

The situation is becoming increasingly tense as more hotels in the city are expected to close. The crisis may escalate further in the upcoming days, with predictions that:

  • The Holiday Inn will join the strike on Monday
  • The Fiesta Americana will close on Tuesday due to a workers' strike.

This means that four major hotels in the Yucatán capital could potentially halt operations in less than a week, dealing an unprecedented blow to Mérida's tourism industry. The conflict stems from the union's demand for a 30% salary increase and a new labor contract, with negotiations so far making no headway.

Hotel owners have stated their intention to continue negotiations at labor conciliation tables, aiming to keep the hotels operational and prevent further closures. This situation marks the most significant labor crisis in Mérida's hotel industry in the past 35 years.
