The Yucatán theater community is set to gather for the 4th State Theater Congress from May 23 to 25. The event aims to provide a platform for dialogue, reflection, and proposals to address challenges and promote the growth of performing arts in the region.
Congress coordinator, Selene Medina, emphasized the significance of this gathering in strengthening connections between artists and tackling issues faced by the Yucatán theater scene. These include limited access to funding, systemic instability, and violence impacting artists, many of whom are engaged in self-managed projects.
Yucatán has distinguished itself as a state with substantial artistic development in Mexico. This is partly due to institutions such as the University of the Arts (UNAY), formerly the Superior School of Arts of Yucatán (ESAY), and the variety of cultural centers and spaces dedicated to performing arts.
The Congress, supported by the Ministry of Culture, will host activities at multiple locations. These include the Armando Manzanero Film Library, UNAY, Sedeculta's Dance Hall and Dance House, the Mayab Culture House, and the Tapanco Cultural Center, among others.
Discussion topics during the event will range from copyright issues, professionalization of the sector, growth and stigma of regional theater, audience development, theatrical practices, cultural journalism, and theater critique. There will also be a focus on sensitizing and approaching the theater technical team, directing monologues for members of the 'Culture for all' Municipal Program, and showcasing community theater work.
The organizers are inviting companies, businesses, and the general public to contribute through in-kind or financial donations to enhance the event's conditions. Those interested in supporting can reach out via the Congress's social media platforms: Facebook and Instagram (State Theatre Congress Yucatán).
During the event, items such as t-shirts, mugs, and other souvenirs will be available for purchase to help cover organizational and logistical expenses.
