In 2024, the Yucatán fishing sector experienced significant financial losses due to various climate change-related factors. Harsh weather conditions, cold fronts, and nearby hurricanes have disrupted fishing activities, affecting the capture, sale, and navigation of vessels in the region.
Despite a strong international demand for species caught and processed in Yucatán, the president of the National Chamber of the Fishing and Aquaculture Industry in Yucatán (Canainpesca) predicts substantial losses in the industry. This is largely due to the inactivity of the fishing fleet for a significant portion of the year.
Adding to the sector's troubles are reported tragedies involving the loss of fishermen's lives. Even though there has been an increase in the catch of certain species, like octopus, grouper fishing has not rebounded. Adverse weather conditions have also hindered the achievement of authorized catch targets.
Next year, measures are expected to be implemented to improve the safety of fishermen and vessels. These initiatives will also aim to address the challenges facing the Yucatán fishing industry.
