Yucatan Govt Hosts Art Events with Enhanced Security at Chichén Itzá

Large crowd gathered at Chichen Itza to witness the Spring Equinox, with the iconic El Castillo pyramid in the background under a clear blue sky

At 4:29 PM, the mythical Kukulcán descends from The Castle in the legendary Chichén Itzá. Over 11,000 visitors watch in awe as the sacred serpent returns to its origin, traversing the earth to breathe new life into it. Within the archaeological site, the 91 steps on each side of the grand pyramid serve as a reminder of the passage of time. This detailed structure, aligned with the moon and the sun, is a crucial element in Mayab culture.

The legendary Chichén Itzá was filled with music and artistic performances at the tourist resort amid a security operation. The Yucatán State Board of Cultural and Tourist Services Units (Cultur) deployed ambulances, paramedics, visitor service personnel, and logistics staff, in addition to maintaining close coordination with the Ministry of Public Security (SSP), the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), and other federal and state agencies.

Our jarana, in conjunction with Yucatecan trova, welcomed thousands of people who, minutes before entering the Mayan city, enjoyed the Classical Ballet of the Honorable Municipality of Temozón under the direction of maestro Lidiet Medina Aranda. The strains of “Flor de Azahar” and “Nicte Há,” along with the dancers’ performances, created a pleasant, unprecedented moment in the context of the awaiting event for the archaeoastronomical phenomenon.

State and federal authorities reported a clean slate for this day of history and culture. The equinox has led to a surge in tourism; in the last five days alone, more than 50,000 people have visited the ancient home of the Itzá.

It’s important to remember that all Mexicans are admitted free next Sunday, March 23rd, and Yucatecans, by decree signed by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, are admitted free to all our sites year-round.

During the following days of March and until mid-April, this phenomenon of light and shadow will continue to be present at the Temple of Kukulcán. For now, the afternoon allows for the return of a god to the firmament, who spent a few brief moments in the heart of Chichén Itzá to fulfill his appointment with history.
