The Yucatán State Government has announced plans to file criminal and administrative complaints regarding counterfeit birth certificates. The complaints will be lodged with the Prosecutor's Office and the Internal Control Body respectively.
The government's statement revealed that not only birth certificates, but also marriage and death certificates were unlawfully issued by Civil Registry officials. Alongside the counterfeit certificates, other crimes have also been identified, including forgery of official documents, failure to provide the necessary documentation, and potential financial harm or impact on third parties.
These offenses could lead to administrative penalties such as dismissal or disqualification, financial sanctions, and even criminal charges. Preliminary reports suggest that these certificates were issued in Yucatán using official Civil Registry paper, but with falsified data not found in local records.
The government statement also recalled similar cases from 2003 and 2008, where individuals from Central America attempted to pose as Mexican citizens before the Federal Electoral Institute, now known as the National Electoral Institute.
The method used in this recent case appears to be different and not limited to the use of official paper, according to the government's statement.
