In a recent press conference at the Government Palace, Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena outlined several initiatives for the state's development. Among these were the introduction of the "Mayan Renaissance 2024-2030" State Development Plan, the modernization of the Progreso port, the hosting of an international beach volleyball tournament, and the launch of a housing initiative.
State Development Plan
Governor Díaz Mena announced that the "Mayan Renaissance 2024-2030" State Development Plan will be officially presented on March 27. The plan was developed with the input of thousands of Yucatán residents. Over 2,000 people participated in citizen consultations, identifying more than 8,000 problems and proposing over 7,000 solutions. Additionally, the plan received contributions from 153,000 individuals via its website.
Seven Guidelines, 48 Aspects
The plan includes seven guidelines and 48 aspects, each with specific objectives and concrete actions. Governor Díaz Mena stated, "The Mayan Renaissance is more than a name; it's a new approach to governance that ensures economic development, social justice, and well-being reach every corner of Yucatán."
Progreso Port Modernization
The governor also announced an agreement for the expansion and modernization of the Progreso port. The project aims to transform the port's infrastructure, positioning Yucatán as a logistic and commercial hub of international significance. The current limitations of the port have affected the state's competitiveness, resulting in the cancellation of 55 cruises between 2023 and 2024. With an initial investment of 7.9 billion pesos, the project plans to expand the port from 36 to 116 operational hectares, create a new 80-hectare platform, deepen the navigation channel, and increase cargo loading and unloading capacity.
Integration with Railways
The modernization of the port will be integrated with the Mayan Train and the Transisthmus Rail through a railway branch, solidifying Yucatán's position as a crucial logistics center in Mexico and Latin America.
International Beach Volleyball Tournament
On the sports front, Governor Díaz Mena announced that Progreso will host the Beach ProTour Challenge Yucatán 2025, an international beach volleyball tournament endorsed by the International Volleyball Federation. The tournament, scheduled for March 19 to 23, will feature 160 world-class athletes, including Olympic champions, competing for international ranking points and qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The event, which will be televised and digitally broadcast worldwide, will help position Yucatán as a premier destination for sports, tourism, and international promotion.
Housing Initiative
The governor also announced the launch of a housing program aimed at providing access to decent housing for thousands of families in the state. While specific details about the program were not provided, Governor Díaz Mena assured that this initiative represents "an important step towards social justice."
