Don’t Miss: Yucatán Urges Polio Vaccinations for Kids

Health officials from IMSS Yucatán are urging parents and guardians to ensure their children are vaccinated against poliomyelitis, a disease that predominantly affects children under 5 years old. Despite the disease being nearly eradicated, it is vital to maintain a regular vaccination schedule to prevent any potential cases.

Polio is caused by a virus that can lead to irreversible paralysis, primarily in the legs, and in severe cases, can cause respiratory issues or even death. The acellular hexavalent vaccine, which protects against polio, is administered at 2, 4, 6, and 18 months of age.

Polio is typically transmitted through the fecal-oral route and can spread through contaminated food or water. It infiltrates the nervous system and can cause symptoms such as fever, headache, neck stiffness, and in some instances, permanent paralysis.

IMSS Yucatán stresses the importance of adhering to the vaccination schedule and encourages visits to Family Medicine Units to ensure children receive the necessary doses. This not only protects against polio but also other preventable infections.

The PrevenIMSS Modules are available for visits Monday to Friday, from 8:00 to 20:00, with no prior appointment needed. Parents are reminded to bring the National Health Card to complete any missing doses. Protect your children's health today!
