This Friday, the Dialogues on Technology and Mayan Language event will take place. The event is a joint effort between CentroGeo Yucatan and the Faculty of Mathematics at the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY). The day will see a gathering of Mayan community representatives and automated language processing experts for an open, collaborative discussion.
The focus of the day will be on addressing the linguistic needs of the Mayan communities, sharing experiences, and seeking technological solutions to the challenges of preserving and enhancing the Mayan language in the digital world. The primary goal of this initiative is to bridge the technological divide that currently separates indigenous Mexican languages, like Mayan, from the dominant languages on most technology platforms, such as English and Spanish.
As the second most spoken indigenous language in Mexico, Mayan faces significant challenges that need immediate attention to ensure its digital representation and sustainability. The event will feature activists, researchers, technologists, and academics, all united in their commitment to promoting the inclusion of indigenous languages in technology.
This event presents a unique opportunity to build connections between community knowledge and contemporary technological tools. Together, they aim to find solutions that advocate for linguistic justice.
