In a bid to promote inclusivity and improve communication access, special education teacher and sign language interpreter, Álvar Adrián May Can, has introduced two books aimed at simplifying the learning process of Mexican Sign Language (LSM). The first book, "Dictionary of Mexican Sign Language for Communication and Didactic Teaching", is unique in its organization. Instead of the traditional alphabetical order, it is structured around semantic fields, enabling users to locate related words within the same category, such as months of the year, with ease. Each section also features QR codes that link to videos demonstrating the sign movements, enhancing understanding.
The second book serves as a grammar guide, assisting learners in comprehending the structure of sign language, which differs from Spanish. Through interactive games and activities, readers can improve their LSM communication skills. This Alvar methodology is rooted in visualization, collaborative learning, and reflection. May Can highlighted the innovative nature of these books, particularly their integration of technology and inclusivity, catering to those unfamiliar with sign language as well as interpreters, family members, and educators. He also noted that this is the first instance of a Yucatan native developing a sign language dictionary, setting a new precedent in the state's educational inclusion efforts. The books were created in partnership with Yucatan's deaf community, who provided their insights and experiences.
One noteworthy aspect of the work is its emphasis on gender equity. Unlike previous dictionaries, which predominantly featured men, this material includes a higher representation of women with disabilities, thereby acknowledging the double discrimination many of them encounter. May Can stressed the growing interest in learning sign language, not just in education, but also in businesses aiming to enhance their service to customers and employees with disabilities.
To promote the books, May Can and the Association for the Deaf of the State of Yucatan (ASEY) have planned presentations at book fairs, libraries, and educational venues. The association will also participate in the Yucatan International Reading Fair (FILEY).
The books are available for purchase through ASEY or the Tercer Escalón publishing house. The dictionary is priced at $600, and the grammar guide at $300. Packages including additional materials like posters and videos are also available. May Can encourages everyone to learn sign language and champion inclusion, emphasizing that it's not only beneficial for families with disabled members, but for society as a whole, as inclusion is everyone's responsibility.
