Yucatán’s Pest Control Heroes: Opossums Save the Day

Specialists in Yucatán have identified opossums as nature's most effective pest control, capable of exterminating harmful insects such as the kissing bug, a known carrier of Chagas disease. These creatures also prey on rodents and even snakes.

Mariana Rodríguez, a researcher from the Dr. Hideyo Noguchi Regional Research Centre, has highlighted the essential role that opossums play within the ecosystem. They consume poisonous animals and insects, contributing significantly to maintaining environmental balance.

Despite often being misunderstood and occasionally attacked, these marsupials are crucial to our environment. Therefore, it is highly recommended to protect them and avoid causing harm, particularly during their breeding season.
